GLOBAL WARMING. PANIC OR REALITY?

Global warming is already under way. The evidence is vast and the urgency of taking action becomes clearer with every new scientific study. Some of the most obvious signs are visible in the Arctic, where rising temperatures and melting ice are dramatically changing the region’s unique landscapes and wildlife—as well as people’s lives and livelihoods. Across the globe, other early warning signs include melting glaciers, shifting ranges of plants and animals, and the earlier onset of spring.

1. What is global warming?

Global warming  is the current rise in the average temperature of Earth's oceans and atmosphere. The scientific consensus is that global warming is occurring and was initiated by human activities, especially those that increase concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as deforestation and burning of fossil fuels.

2. What is the process involved in the greenhouse effect?

The "greenhouse effect" is the warming that happens when certain gases in Earth's atmosphere trap heat. These gases let in light but keep heat from escaping, like the glass walls of a greenhouse. First, sunlight shines onto the Earth's surface, where it is absorbed and then radiates back into the atmosphere as heat. In the atmosphere, “greenhouse” gases trap some of this heat, and the rest escapes into space. The more greenhouse gases are in the atmosphere, the more heat gets trapped.

3. What signs warn us about global warming?

Some of the signs are visible in the Arctic, where rising temperatures and melting ice are dramatically changing the region’s unique landscapes and wildlife—as well as people’s lives and livelihoods. Across the globe, other early warning signs include melting glaciers, shifting ranges of plants and animals, and the earlier onset of spring.

4.Watch the video and explain this idea: Global warming: panic or reality?

I think it's true what the video says, because humans are destroying this beautiful planet without even thinking about the consequences later. I think if everyone put their little bit we could get to a better world and stop a little global warming.

5. What can we do to stop global warming? Suggest five ideas.

- Using more bicycles instead of cars with diesel or gasoline.
- Utilitzar les papereres. No llençar la brossa al terra.
- Use more renewable energy sources like solar energy, wind energy and hydropower.
- Recycle containers. Everything in its container!
- Care a little more about our beautiful world!

RESPONSIBLE CONSUMER

Who Made My Trainers? How To Be A Responsible Consumer

1. Your local supermarket sells really delicious potato crisps. They’re also really cheap. One day a friend tells you that the crisps are made from potatoes which are picked by children. What’s more, the children are not paid. They work 12 hours a day. All they get is a bed and an evening meal. Many of them are sick and unhappy.

Question: Would you keep buying the crisps?
There will continue to buy this potatoe crisps because I think that child abuse is horrible besides, what those poor kids have done to deserve this? So go to another supermarket or buy other potatoe crisps.

2. You discover that your favourite brand of shampoo is made by a company that tests its products on rabbits. When they do this, some of the rabbits go blind. Many of them suffer from skin inflammations and have to be destroyed.

Question: Would you keep using this shampoo?
If I see that the shampoo is good and have already fixed this problem I would use but if not change it for precaution.

Your favourite music group is really cool, and you buy all their albums. Then you realise that some of their songs contain ideas that could be considered racist and sexist. This is confirmed when you read a news report in which the band leader is accused of having intolerant attitudes towards minority groups.

Question: Would you keep buying their albums?
If you really like their music probably continue to buy.

UNIT 9: An email to an internet forum.

Hi,

My name's Laia Arnau Constans and I live in Greenwich in South London. I like the area where I live, so I want to improve it.

In my opinion there isn't anywhere for young people to go. There aren't any facilities for them. As a result, young people spend all their time hanging around on the street. There are sometimes problems with vandalism and graffiti.

I think the council should do something about this. I'm sure we should have a youth café, for example.

Laia Arnau Constans.

Campaign poster 'only children can fully see'

A poster designed to be fully seen only by children has been used by a Spanish charity.
When looked at from a child's height, a "secret" message showing a helpline number shows up.
The poster uses a technique called lenticular printing - which means looking from a different angle shows a slightly different image.
It's being used as part of a campaign by the Anar Foundation to tackle child abuse.
Lenticular printing is also used to create 3D effects and make things look animated.

Tour de France: Froome not Bradley Wiggins to lead Sky

Sir Bradley Wiggins' chances of winning the Tour de France again appear to be dashed - Chris Froome's been confirmed as Team Sky's leader this year.

His teammate Froome helped him to victory.
Team Sky boss Dave Brailsford said: "Given Chris' step-up in performances this year, our plan, as it has been since January, is to have him lead the Tour de France team."
Each team has a leader, and their teammates have to work really hard to help that rider win the race.
Wiggins is currently aiming to become the first British winner of the Giro d'Italia, a three-week bike race across Italy.
He is leading Team Sky, who lie in second place after Sunday's stage two.

The Host

This is the film of a book by Stephenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight series.
There are no vampires this time - Earth has been infiltrated by parasitic aliens called "souls", which possess humans. There's a love story, of course, between a boy and a "soul". Twilight fans will be happy!

Around the world in eighty days

Phileas Fogg, an eccentric English gentleman and bachelor, lives in London. He is one of the most upstanding members of the Reform Club. He comes to his club every morning on the stroke of 11.30. He reads the newspapers, eats at 12 o'clock, talks very little, plays whist with his fellow club members and goes back home at midnight. Phileas Fogg has just hired a new servant, a French man called Passepartout. Passepartout feels happy to work for the calm Mr. Fogg. After a turbulent youth he hopes to live in peace. He takes great pleasure in contemplating the schedule of his daily duties. From 8 in the morning until midnight everything is planned. 'Just what I need', he thinks, a homeloving and organized man.

A MEMORABLE DAY

-->
I remember my auntie's wedding four years ago. It was a very memorable day.

First, all the family came to my grandmother's house. At four o'clock we went to the church for the ceremony, and after that we went to a typical Catalan house. We had a snack there and then the party started at about nine o'clock. There was an amazing band and everybody danced. Finally, at about midnight, I went to sleep in this typical Catalan house.

There were a thirty people at the wedding. I remember my little cousin fell in the pool. It was a really fun day and I felt vary happy.
